Why Is Schwab Expanding Beyond Bitcoin And Ether?
Charles Schwab plans to add Solana, Avalanche and Chainlink to its cryptocurrency trading platform in the coming months, widening its direct digital asset offering beyond Bitcoin and Ether as the brokerage builds out a broader retail crypto business. Schwab Crypto began rolling out to retail clients in May, allowing customers to trade Bitcoin and Ether directly alongside traditional investments through Schwab’s website, mobile app and thinkorswim platform. The addition of SOL, AVAX and LINK will give customers access to three of the larger crypto networks outside the two dominant digital assets. The expansion is notable because Schwab is bringing crypto trading into the same ecosystem used for stocks, exchange-traded funds and other conventional investments. That removes the need for clients interested in digital assets to maintain a separate account with a crypto-native exchange. Schwab has said it intends to add further cryptocurrencies and digital assets over time, although it has not identified additional tokens or provided a timetable beyond the three assets now scheduled for inclusion. How Does Schwab Crypto Work?
Schwab charges 75 basis points, or 0.75%, on the dollar value of each cryptocurrency transaction. The service is available across the United States except New York and Louisiana and is not currently offered in U.S. territories or international markets. Crypto accounts are provided through Charles Schwab Premier Bank, while affiliated brokerage Charles Schwab & Co. performs certain operational functions on the bank’s behalf. That structure places digital asset trading within Schwab’s existing financial services network rather than treating it as a standalone crypto venture. For Schwab, the immediate opportunity is access to an existing customer base that already holds trillions of dollars through the firm. As of July 31, Schwab reported $13.04 trillion in client assets across 39.9 million active brokerage accounts. Even limited adoption among that customer base could translate into substantial crypto trading activity. The challenge will be convincing investors that the convenience of trading within Schwab justifies the transaction cost and the narrower asset selection compared with dedicated cryptocurrency platforms.Investor Takeaway
Schwab does not need to become a full-scale crypto exchange for digital assets to become meaningful to its business. Its advantage is distribution: millions of existing brokerage customers can gain direct crypto exposure without leaving the Schwab platform.
